Five for Friday - 26/03/2010

Right, I’ve never done one of these before but the lovely totallyamazing suggested I give it a try. Here are five songs I really like and want to share with you; some will be recent, some will be a bit older, but the main thing is that I love them and think you need them in your life.

Pet Shop Boys - Flamboyant

I always forget the genius of this until it comes up on shuffle or one of my playlists. Who else but PSB would rhyme “tacky” with “Issey Miyake”?

Ellie Goulding - Salt Skin

The closing track from her wonderful album Lights, this is simply beautiful. I especially love the intro, it reminds me of being under the sea for some reason!

Christina Aguilera - Fighter

In honour of her forthcoming single and album, here’s my favourite Christina track bar none - one of the all-time great videos, too.

Peaches - Operate

I have to be in the mood to listen to the whole thing, but Fatherfucker is still a fun album. This is the best track, and was also memorably used in Mean Girls (AKA the best film of all time). (Could only find a fan-made video, sorry!)

Joni Mitchell - Both Sides Now

Let’s finish with something gorgeous. This song never fails to bring a tear to my eye; my boyfriend wants this to be the first dance at our wedding.

Hello!

Once again my tumbling(?) has fallen by the wayside. I think I have a bit of a block - what should I post about? Please feel free to comment with your suggestions!

On the subject of Lulu…

Let’s remind ourselves that Shout was covered by none other than Shabnam from Big Brother 8 - remember her? She’s the one who asked Big Brother “if I leave early will I still get mag deals?” - what a desperado! Here’s an incredible video of her performing ‘live’ at some event:

I wonder what she’s up to now?

Saw this in Waterstones today

Lulu’s Secrets To Looking Good -

Who the fuck is she kidding? Her secret is clearly PHOTOSHOP.

Sorry but Lulu does my head in - from her ever-changing accent and terrible botox/surgery/whatever is it face, to her dismal attempts at getting on TV and in the papers (remember when she hosted the Lottery show years ago? She was notably shit on a show that’s always rubbish anyway, which takes some doing) she is pretty much a perfect storm of twat.

I wonder if she’s still claiming to be ‘in her fifties’ - my dad remembers her when she was starting out as a singer in Glasgow, she was a good few years older than him and he’s 62 now, hmm.

To stop my first ‘proper’ post in a while being relentlessly negative, I will admit that Shout is still a fucking amazing song. Oh, and she was alright when she guested on Ab Fab. Apart from that she’s dreadful though!

Hello!

I’ve not updated this in ages, I’m sorry. Just a quick post to say that I AM STILL ALIVE and will be posting regularly again soon!

Also amazing

Castlevania - Circle of the Moon.

This was the first Castlevania game on the Gameboy Advance, and since it was followed by two far nicer-looking games (graphically) it’s not really that fondly remembered despite the fact it’s VERY VERY GOOD INDEED. I should probably mention that I’m a total Castlevania addict, it’s one of my favourite game series ever. My favourites are the ones where you explore a massive castle, picking up equipment and learning skills as you progress (these are known as “Metroidvanias” since they’re a bit like Metroid) - there hasn’t been a bad one yet! The other CV games can be hit or miss though, particularly the spinoff titles (there was a ‘fighting game’ thing for the Wii recently that was genuinely awful. Stay away!).

Anyway, Circle of the Moon. I’m going to replay this as well!

You know what was an amazing game?

Final Fantasy V!

Really, really underrated, but for me it’s probably the most fun of the lot! I actually like that it doesn’t have as much of a story as the others, somehow it feels really fitting and works well. The Job system is the best thing ever though, I loved how versatile it made things - you could make the characters do anything.

I think it’s overdue for another playthrough. I might look for the GBA version, which apparently has four new jobs (which would make it approx. 8% more amazing).

This is AMAZING - probably a bugger to play without sliding all over the place, but on a technical level it’s just brilliant.

Pick of the Day: Roisin Murphy - ‘Momma’s Place’

Love it!

A question

Tomorrow’s my brother’s birthday, should I get him anything? Now before you think I’m just being mean, let me explain. My brother has spent the last few years going on about how birthdays are a load of crap and we shouldn’t be taken in by them, it’s just a moneygrabbing exercise, etc etc etc. He has a particular issue with cards. Accordingly, he doesn’t give them to anyone and rarely gets people gifts. HOWEVER, my parents and I always end up getting him stuff because, well, it’s his birthday isn’t it - and he’s always very happy to accept gifts (especially cash ones)! This year I’m considering putting his belief system to the test by not getting him anything. What do you think?
